HIPAA requires your office protect the confidentiality, integrity and accessibility of patient information. In order to accomplish this, you must address the technical, administrative and physical risks to this information. While offices are making the transition to the cloud, you should not slack off on physical security, including office access controls.
Part of the MIPS program is improvement activities. There are two weights of improvement activities High and Medium. High weight activities are worth 20 points and Medium Weight activities are worth 10 points.
There is a special bonus for small practices, the value of the improvement activities is doubled for small practices. For a small practice High weight activities are worth 40 points and Medium Weight activities are worth 20 points. A small practice is practice with 15 individual NPI numbers in the same Tax ID.
“A new patient was seen with heel pain. X-rays were taken at an outside facility, and I independently interpreted these and reviewed the labs. Based on medical decision making, I believe I should be coding CPT 99204. The patient had one new, acute problem (previously undiagnosed) and I independently interpreted tests. To me this is a no brainer, but my office staff argues that they believe it should be CPT 99203. Thoughts?"
